Jhanvi Kapoor Career

Janhvi Kapoor made her acting debut in 2018 with Dhadak, directed by Shashank Khaitan and co-starring Ishaan Khatter. The film, a Hindi adaptation of the 2016 Marathi hit Sairat, showcased her as a young upper-class girl whose life takes a tragic turn after marrying a boy from a lower socioeconomic background, played by Khatter.

Despite largely negative critical feedback, the film achieved significant commercial success, earning ₹1.11 billion globally. Rajeev Masand, writing for News18, criticized the omission of caste-related themes present in the original, deeming it inferior, but complimented Kapoor’s “fragile charm” and “soulful quality” on screen.

In contrast, Anna M. M. Vetticad of Firstpost found her performance lackluster and uninspiring. Kapoor’s debut performance earned her the Zee Cine Award for Best Female Debut and the same year, she was named brand ambassador for Nykaa.

Kapoor’s next appearance was in Zoya Akhtar’s segment of the Netflix anthology Ghost Stories (2020).

While the film as a whole received harsh criticism, Shubhra Gupta of The Indian Express highlighted Kapoor’s role as a “genuine surprise” due to her “honest and compelling act.”

Kapoor then took on the role of Gunjan Saxena in Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl, a biographical drama about one of India’s first female combat pilots. Originally slated for a theatrical release, the film premiered on Netflix due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kapoor trained rigorously, shadowing Saxena to embody the physicality and demeanor of an Air Force officer. Saibal Chatterjee of NDTV described her performance as “reasonably solid,” while Rahul Desai of Film Companion praised her “intimate and nuanced” portrayal, calling it “spot-on.” Her work earned her a Filmfare Award nomination for Best Actress.

In 2021, Kapoor starred alongside Rajkummar Rao in the horror-comedy Roohi, which faced multiple delays due to the pandemic. Both the film and Kapoor’s performance received poor reviews, and the movie underperformed at the box office.

The following year, Kapoor featured in Good Luck Jerry, a remake of the Tamil film Kolamaavu Kokila, released on Disney+ Hotstar. She also played the lead role in Mili, a remake of the Malayalam film Helen, portraying a young woman trapped in a freezer.

Anupama Chopra commended her for bringing “sincerity and sweetness” to the character, though she noted it fell short of Anna Ben’s original portrayal.

Kapoor’s upcoming projects include the sports drama Mr. and Mrs. Mahi with Rajkummar Rao and the action-packed Bawaal opposite Varun Dhawan.
